Palm Sunday

Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week, commemorating Jesus’ triumphal entry into Jerusalem as people laid palm branches and cloaks before him. It’s a time for reflection on humility, hope, and the unfolding path to the cross. At Otterbein UMC we observe this day with prayer, scripture, and the waving of palms, welcoming all who seek community and spiritual renewal as we prepare for the events of Holy Week and the promise of Easter.

Memorial Day!

Memorial Day is a federal holiday observed on the last Monday in May to honor and remember the men and women who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Originally known as Decoration Day after the Civil War, it has evolved into a day of solemn remembrance marked by ceremonies at cemeteries and memorials, moments of silence, and the placing of flags and flowers on graves. Many people also use the day to reflect on the sacrifices made for the country, attend parades, and spend time with family, while recognizing that its primary purpose is to pay respect to those who gave their lives in military service.

St Patrick's Day

Happy St Patrick’s Day!

Today is St. Patrick’s Day, but the real story behind it is more powerful than green shirts and shamrocks.

Patrick wasn’t Irish. As a teenager, he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave. During those lonely years, he turned to God and his faith grew strong. Eventually he escaped and made it home.

But here’s the amazing part.

Instead of staying away from the place where he suffered, Patrick chose to go back to Ireland as a missionary. He returned to share the hope of Jesus with the very people who once enslaved him.

His life reminds us that God can take our hardest moments and turn them into a mission.

So today, while people celebrate with green and shamrocks, remember the deeper story: a life changed by faith, courage, forgiveness, and a calling to share the good news.

What’s one way your faith has helped you turn a hard moment into something meaningful?

Spring Forward

Daylight Saving Time begins this weekend — remember to “spring forward” and set your clocks forward one hour. The extra evening daylight is a great opportunity to enjoy more time outdoors, join community activities, or spend relaxed moments with family after work. Use the change as a gentle reminder to check smoke detector batteries, adjust thermostats if needed, and rest well the night before. We look forward to brighter evenings together.

Ash Wednesday

Ash Wednesday.

We are participating with St Paul UM Church of Manchester. We will gather at St Paul for worship at 7:00 pm

Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of Lent, a season of reflection, repentance, and renewed devotion. Christians receive a cross of ashes on the forehead as a visible sign of humility and mortality, echoing the words, “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return.” This simple act invites believers to turn back to God, confess sin, and commit to spiritual disciplines—prayer, fasting, and acts of mercy—leading toward the deeper remembrance of Christ’s sacrifice and the hope of resurrection.

President’s Day

Presidents’ Day is a federal holiday observed on the third Monday in February to honor the leadership and legacy of U.S. presidents, most notably George Washington and Abraham Lincoln, whose birthdays fall in February. Originally established in 1885 to commemorate Washington’s birthday, the holiday evolved through the 1971 Uniform Monday Holiday Act to provide a long weekend and to celebrate the contributions of all presidents. Many communities mark the day with educational programs, civic ceremonies, and reflections on presidential history and public service. For some, it’s also a time for retail sales and family gatherings.

Veterans Day is a federal holiday in the United States observed annually on November 11th. It honors military veterans who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Originally known as Armistice Day, it commemorates the end of World War I, marked by the armistice signed on November 11, 1918.
